Interview (EPM): Kai Krämer, a Senior consultant at Genius Project

bsoco: What do you consider as “revolutionary” in the field of EPM now?

Kai Krämer: I would say the fact that processes are changing a lot and everything is getting faster. For example, data is no longer compiled in order to be presented to management. Now,  management takes the data and information on their own, directly from the system.

It is the same for project teams. Project managers don’t get the status of projects and tasks during meetings or via email; organizations have timesheets and reports which provide all the necessary information in real time.

bsoco: What are the main features of your software? What do you guarantee to your customers?

Kai Krämer: Genius Project has a resource management module which works with all projects.

Each change or delay in a planned or in progress project activity has a direct impact on the general system, on the other projects and on the capacity. The project manager and the team leader keep the overview and control on the capacities and charges. Genius Project makes it very easy and efficient to manage resources in multi-project environments.

Genius Project also offers cross-portfolio management. Portfolios are groups of projects selected according to some criteria, like project type for example. The portfolio housing a group of projects does not need to group them manually. There is a selection filter in the system which automatically makes projects part of the portfolio, including new projects. It is a great way to keep the overview.

bsoco: Can we add custom business functions to the EPM software? How easy is this to do?

Kai Krämer: Processes in organizations go through several steps; for example, documents which require approvals and validations.

In Genius Project, document types and workflows are easy to create and companies can customize them according to their needs. It is possible to configure and link them according to the organization’s needs. Genius Project is highly customizable and can be adapted to almost all the processes of an organization.

bsoco: Which advice would you give to an organization before deploying PPM Software?

Kai Krämer:
1)  We always ask companies to have a clear overview of all processes and responsibilities before configuration. This way we ensure that no time is lost during implementation, for processes which are not supposed to be executed by the software.

2) Organizations need to communicate clearly on the implementation. Software does not replace project managers. PPM software serves as an assistant to project managers for managing projects efficiently.

3) We also ask organizations to prepare all documentation and charts to be used for their projects. With all the documents ready, the Genius Project team can help clients in the most efficient way to understand the types of projects and keywords faster.

bsoco: Thank you for your answers.
