Education as the greatest asset: IMC invests in Africa

The new research project from IMC AG, Europe’s market leader in e-learning, supports political calls to invest more in education in Africa. In future, African school children will learn to work academically in online laboratories, helping to promote their digital skills.

A few days before her trip to the EU-Africa Summit, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel appealed to African states to invest more in education. Merkel called upon them to “look after your youngsters, they are ready to learn”.

The Saarland-based IMC AG is leading the way and investing in African education. The full-service provider for digital training is working together with research partners on the “Go-Lab Goes Africa” project to introduce online research laboratories into schools in Africa. The project will commence on January 1st, 2018.

The African education system has many hurdles to overcome for young people. A lack of infrastructure makes the journey to school for young girls and boys difficult, premises are scarce and poorly equipped, from tables and sanitary facilities up to computers. Improving the education opportunities will contribute towards limiting the migration of people from many different countries in Africa. To have better opportunities on the national and international job markets, basic education today must include digital competencies.

The „Go-Lab Goes Africa“ project will last for three years and aims to develop a knowledge portal for schools in Africa. Content will be available in French and Swahili. This solution will be tested in schools in Nigeria, Kenya and Benin. The schools will be equipped with the necessary technology, teachers will be trained on the use of digital laboratories in their classes and the solution will include offline functionalities for use when internet connectivity is poor.
